CAR

The issue of car insurance and registration is complex as there appear to be many different points of view.  The rules change according to several variables, ie if you are a French resident, if your car has been in France more than 6 months, etc.

However EU regulation states that 'As a general rule, your vehicle should be registered and taxed in the country where you have your normal residence. If you plan to move your car with you to a different Member State and live there, you will have to register it in your host country. You should register your vehicle up to 6 months after its entrance in the host country.'      EU Site

If you are not a resident of France, and have a second house here, then you are not obliged to have French plates.  Several UK insurers offer year round insurance, but based on the fact that the car does not stay in France any longer than 6 months at one time.

And a word of caution, as Alex Lancashire says ' Your registration number is automatically logged with remote cameras when you enter or leave the UK, likewise your passport when you fly'.

If you wish to register your car in France, check this useful AngloInfo Car registration guide It is cheaper to register your car with French plates in the long run, because the controle technique is only done every two years, although you may have some hefty initial costs such as to change the lights, a CO2 tax on higher emmission vehicles, and for a certificate of conformity, etc.

Useful tips provided by Julie Baddeley, who used to work in insurance:

- Check if the Insurance company request notification each time you leave the UK.

- If the Insurance company does not request notification they use utmost good faith (Non-disclosure is a breach of utmost good faith occurring when one party to the contract knows a fact that the other does not.   Had the other party known about this fact, they either would not have entered into the contract or negotiated their own better terms).  If you have a claim and the Insurance company have any doubts they could investigate and request proof of last exit from UK ie ferry.

- On some of the Insurance covers they will provide 90 days cover but be careful because some Insurance companies only give 90 days in total for one year and the limit is 30 days per one visit. Check the policy.
